A rather spare entry about Napoleon Bonaparte included (when I clicked on "Source information") a general list of references that included both the Encyclopedia Britannica and Wikipedia. But the primary source was "Wolfram/Alpha curated data."

Final verdict: Wolfram|Alpha is fun to play with, and introduces an original format for finding information on the Web. As it currently stands, it may be useful for mathematical and scientific research. However, until it aggregates a lot more data, and learns to handle more complex user queries, this interesting experiment is no danger to Google. In this case, David is lobbing equations at Goliath instead of Latitude C600 laptop battery stones -- which may be impressive, but certainly won't kill any giants.

OCZ's high-capacity battery SSD 'a solid choice'

In my quest to test all of the latest high-capacity consumer solid-state disk (SSD) drives, I came upon OCZ Technology's Apex SATA II SSD Inspiron 500m laptop battery and was impressed not so much with its performance -- though you will see a boost when using it -- as with its price.

OCZ describes the Apex laptop SSD series drive as a "midrange offering for system builders and mainstream computer users." It's available in 60GB, 120GB and 250GB capacities. I tested the 2.5-in., 120GB version, since drives of that capacity and larger tend to be faster when writing data than 60GB models.

You can buy the 120GB version -- the one I tested -- for US$295 at Newegg.com and the 250GB model for $675. For those of you who are bad at math, that's between $2.46 and $2.70 a gigabyte, which is pretty good for SSD. For comparison purposes, the 256GB Samsung SATA II SSD that I recently reviewed has a retail price of $500.

Using a Dell Latitude D830 312-0305 laptop battery with a 2.4-GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor running Windows XP Professional SP2, I connected the drive using an adapter in my laptop's optical drive bay. I then tested it using ATTO Technology's ATTO Disk Benchmark v2.34, and Simpli Software's HD Tach v3.0.4 benchmarking utilities. While I was able to successfully test both read and write performance with the ATTO app, HD Tach had problems properly measuring write performance. So, I only have read performance measurements from that utility.

ATTO indicated the OCZ drive had a 233MB/sec. average read speed and a 153MB/sec. average write speed -- not far from OCZ's claims of 230MB/sec. read and 160MB/sec. write speeds.

Next, I tested the drive using HD Tach. Normally, the results are similar to those reported by ATTO; in this case, they were way off. I tested and retested and got virtually the same 312-0306 laptop battery results every time. The average read time was around 156MB/sec., the burst speed was around 230MB/sec. and random access time was an excellent 2 milliseconds. CPU utilization was a respectable 7%.

Boot time for Windows XP was excellent: From a cold start, it took just 22 seconds; with a restart, it took 25 seconds. (Normal boot time with a 7,200-rpm laptop drive is 70 seconds.) And for Mac users, the same drive boots Mac OS X 10.5.6 on a late model MacBook in 23 seconds from start-up chime to desktop.

When comparing 2.5-in. consumer SSDs, I consider Intel's fast X25-M SSD to be the gold standard. The 80GB X25-M has so far beaten the competition when it comes to performance because its more sophisticated, 10-channel architecture and F5136 laptop battery firmware that takes advantage of Native Command Queuing (NCQ). That allows the controller to prefetch data in order to access it more quickly from inactive NAND flash chips. (It's analogous to having a grocery list before going to shop.) The drawback to the X25-M is its much higher price -- $595 retail, $365 on sites such as Pricegrabber.com -- despite the comparatively lower 80GB capacity.

Like Intel, OCZ's SSD is based on multilayer cell NAND flash memory, which means it packs two or more bits per cell vs. the more efficient, but lower-capacity, single-layer cell Inspiron 710m laptop battery memory, which only lays down one bit per cell.

I also compared SSDs with one of the fastest hard disk drives going: Western Digital's 10,000-rpm Velociraptor, which has a 250.2MB/sec. burst speed and 105.6MB/sec. average read through HD Tach.

Like most SSDs, OCZ's drive is lightweight. It weighs just 2.7 ounces, and the factory-stated meantime between failure is 1.5 million hours. OCZs Apex comes with a two-year warranty.

Overall, the drive is a pretty good performer at a very Inspiron 700m laptop battery attractive price. If you're not looking to break I/O barriers, but still want the many benefits of SSD -- such as improved read/write performance, lower power consumption and greater durability -- this drive is a solid choice.

HP starts selling batteries guaranteed for laptop's lifetime

Hewlett-Packard will begin selling on Monday Latitude D510 laptop batteries that are guaranteed to last three years.

The batteries use Sonata cells from Boston Power, a startup battery maker that has developed a Lithium Ion battery that can last for a thousand charging cycles without degrading. That's about two to three times more than a typical lithium ion battery. Further, the Sonata batteries will charge to 80 percent of their capacity in 30 minutes, which is faster than most other lithium ion Latitude D505 batteries.

From Monday HP will offer the batteries through its online store for 18 models in its consumer laptop range. The machines represent about 70 percent of all consumer laptops sold by HP.

And from later in March they'll be available to customers buying new PCs.

The computer maker with brand the Latitude D500 batteries "Enviro," which highlights their green credentials. Longer lasting batteries mean fewer or no replacements need to be bought so waste is reduced and could even help extend the useful life of old machines. The batteries themselves also contain no PVC and have earned the Nordic Ecolabel certification.

Recycling of the batteries will be handled by HP through the same channels it currently uses.

The batteries will cost US$150, which is about $20 more expensive than most of the replacement batteries currently listed by Inspiron 600m HP.

For now they won't be available on HP's business laptop range but Christina Lampe-Onnerud, CEO of Boston Power, said talks continue with HP and she's hopeful they will come to more of the company's laptop computers.

The deal with HP to sell the new Inspiron 510m batteries represents the first validation of Boston Power's technology from a major laptop vendor. The Massachusetts company was founded in 2005 and produces its batteries in China and Taiwan.

Battery tests: The new MacBook and MacBook Pro

Battery life is a key aspect of a laptop, especially to travelers who don't have easy access to a laptop battery power outlet. To test the new MacBook and MacBook Pro for battery life, we performed a battery-drain test by watching a movie clip ripped from a DVD to the laptop's hard drive. We played the movie at full screen, with the screen brightness set to maximum to simulate the low lighting of an airplane cabin. If the movie finished and the battery still had power, we played the movie again, until the 6Y270 battery drained.

The new 2.4GHz and 2.0GHz Core 2 Duo MacBooks have comparable battery capacities, each lasting a little over 2 hours, 30 minutes. That's plenty long for most movies, though if you're watching "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring"you might miss the end. However, these results indicate that the new MacBook has about 22 to 24 minutes shorter battery life than the old white plastic 2.1GHz Core 2 Duo MacBook, which finished our test at 2 hours, 57 312-0068 minutes.

Since the two new MacBook Pro models each have a pair of graphics cards, we ran the battery life test using each one, resulting two battery life scores for each MacBook Pro. At the MacBook unveiling last week, Steve Jobs boasted that with the MacBook Pro's Nvidia GeForce 9400M graphics card enabled you could achieve up to 5 hours of battery life, and 4 hours with the GeForce 9600M (the same graphics subsystem in the new MacBook). We're guessing that he didn't expect users to replicate those times while playing DVDs. Instead, those projected times likely are the results of tests that were not as demanding on the Latitude D610 computer, like word-processing or Web browsing.

While watching a movie, you can expect battery life of roughly half of those projected times. Using the 9600M GT graphics card, the 2.53GHz MacBook Pro lasted 2 hours, 12 minutes, while the 2.4GHz MacBook Pro lasted 2 hours, 18 minutes. You'll barely be able to watch an entire movie in that amount of time. That said, you really don't need the better performance of the 9600M GT while watching a movie.

Movies run just as smooth on the 9400M, and you'll get longer Latitude D600 battery life. Unfortunately, when using the 9400M, the battery life for either MacBook Pro model did not improve significantly. The 2.53GHz MacBook Pro gained 17 minutes, while the 2.4GHz MacBook Pro lasted 13 minutes longer. Interestingly, the 9400M times between the MacBook Pro models and the MacBooks are similar.

Comparing the MacBook Pro's 9400M battery life with the previous MacBook Pro, and the older MacBook Pro comes out ahead by 15 percent--the older MacBook Pro's battery lasted close to 3 hours.

While the new Macbooks and Macbook Pros do not have the battery capacity that many users demand for a long distance travel, they still should get your through most feature length movies. These tests are only one kind of Latitude D520 battery test and do not in any way indicate the expected battery life for while doing everyday tasks, like email, Web browsing, writing text, etc.

HP, Dell, Toshiba recall Sony laptop batteries again

Three of the biggest laptop computer makers are recalling certain 6T473 batteries because of a risk they may overheat and catch fire. Sony made the batteries and the recall mirrors -- yet appears a lot smaller than -- a similar one that occurred two years ago.

This time, around 100,000 batteries are affected, a fraction of the 9.6 million recalled in 2006. Dell, Hewlett-Packard (HP) and Toshiba have already issued recalls for the batteries that were used in their products and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said "consumers should stop using recalled laptop battery products immediately."

The batteries in question were manufactured between October 2004 and June 2005 and to date there have been about 40 incidents reportedly globally of Inspiron 5100 laptop battery overheating, Sony said Friday.

Most of the incidents are believed to be due to manufacturing line adjustments made during the period that may laptop battery have affected some batteries, Sony said. Additionally some may have been due to raw material flaws.

Of the 100,000 batteries affected, around 35,000 were used in laptops shipped in the U.S. By far the greatest number, about 32,000, were shipped with HP laptops.

The maker said it is recalling Inspiron 1100 batteries that have a barcode label beginning with A0, L0, L1 or GC that were shipped with HP Pavilion dv1000, dv8000 and zd8000 models; with Compaq Presario v2000 and v2400 machines and with HP Compaq nc6110, nc6120, nc6140, nc6220, nc6230,nx4800, nx4820, nx6110, nx6120 and nx9600 computers.

Toshiba's U.S. recall covers around 3,000 Satellite A70/A75, P30/P5, M30X/M35X and M50/M55 laptops and Tecra A3, A5 and S2 C1295 laptop battery computers.

Dell is recalling battery model OU091 in Latitude 110L and Inspiron 1100, 1150, 5100, 5150 and 5160 computers.

Consumers who believe they have batteries that have been recalled should stop using the batteries and check with their PC vendor.

An additional 2,000 batteries were shipped in the Japanese market and the remaining 63,000 went to consumers in other regions, including Europe and Asia. Recall notices for machines shipped in these other regions are expected to be issued 1X793 laptop battery shortly.

Laptop and battery prices dip under $300 in the US

Laptops are closing the price gap on less-powerful Latitude D620 netbooks, with retailers delivering fully equipped systems for under US$300 as part of promotional offers.

Wal-Mart will start offering limited quantities of a fully loaded Compaq laptop for $298 starting July 26, according to an entry on Wal-Mart's Checkoutblog site.

The laptop being offered is a Compaq Presario CQ60-419WM from Hewlett-Packard, which is powered by Advanced Micro Devices' Sempron SI-42 processor running at 2.1GHz. The laptop comes with Windows Vista and includes a 15.6-inch screen, 3GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive and Nvidia's GeForce 8200M integrated graphics. It also includes a DVD-RW drive, according to RC107 specifications provided by HP.

For such a low price, the laptop is packed with features and could run out of stock quickly. "We expect this one will be quite popular," wrote a Wal-Mart official going by the name of Ryan in the blog entry. Wal-Mart didn't clarify whether the offering would be in-store or online, and the retailer didn't immediately return requests for comment.

The offer follows a Y9943 move earlier this week by Best Buy to offer an Acer laptop with a 15.6-inch screen for $299. The offer was later pulled after Best Buy ran out of stock, according to a report in CNET. The laptop was powered by a single-core AMD Athlon 64 running at 2.0GHz and ran Windows Vista. The laptop also included 2GB of RAM and a 160GB hard drive.

By comparison, the cheapest netbook on Wal-Mart's online store is available for $238 and is less powerful than the Compaq laptop. The Asus Eee PC900HD includes an 8.9-inch screen Inspiron 640m and runs on an Intel Atom N270 at 1.6GHz. It includes 512MB of RAM and a 160GB hard drive and comes with Windows XP.

Mainstream laptop prices have dipped under the $300 mark just a few times, including in 2007, when Toshiba offered a laptop for $299. Most of the mainstream laptops listed on Wal-Mart's site today are priced over $350.

Wal-Mart also plans to add a "very cool Acer laptop" with an eight-hour Inspiron 630m battery life over the next few days, according to the company. It also plans to add a HP netbook.

Pixel Qi readies battery-saving laptop screens

One Laptop Per Child spin-off Pixel Qi on Thursday said it will soon start shipping low-power screens that could increase Latitude D820 laptop battery life by up to 50 percent.

The company's LCD (liquid crystal display) screens include technology to absorb natural light sources to brighten screens, said Mary Lou Jepsen, founder and CEO of Pixel Qi. That helps save battery life as it reduces the need for a backlight, which is used to light up conventional laptop screens.

"Instead of cranking up the backlight to laptop battery fight sunlight or the light of the office overhead fluorescent tubes, we realized we could use the brilliant ambient light in the image itself, saving power," said Jepsen.

A casual laptop user may see laptop battery life jump from three hours to four-and-a-half hours by switching to the light-powered laptop battery +screens, Jepsen said. The new screens will provide full color depth and refresh rates that are comparable to conventional laptop screens.

The screens pull as much ambient light from sources as possible, but the technology may not work effectively for users watching DVD movies in dark rooms, Jepsen said.

"The conventional LCD screens in computers are just miniature LCD-TVs. That's perfect, if all you want to do is watch movies all day, sitting in a TD175 laptop battery darkened room, with the device plugged in," Jepsen said, in an e-mail interview.

Low power consumption of the screen, one of the more power-hungry components on a laptop, could lead to cheaper and lighter laptops, Jepsen said.

"Instead of putting six battery cells into this model, I'll tryLatitude D620 laptop battery fewer or use less-powerful cells, making the machine lighter and cheaper, and the battery life exactly the same," Jepsen said.

The small bump in battery life isn't close to Jepsen's previous plans of laptop battery life between 20 and 40 hours. However, Jepsen said Pixel Qi is working to blur the line between the screen and motherboard, which could boost battery life more.

"We'll get to larger PC764 laptop battery power savings later so the screen can enable much longer battery life, but for that we need the manufacturers to make changes in the motherboard, which will come in 2010-11," Jepsen said.

The screens will ship for sampling in a few months and be in laptops by the middle of the year, Jepsen said. Initially, the company will ship 10-inch screens. She didn't name PC makers that would eventually use those screens in laptops.

A variant of Pixel Qi's low-power screen technology was first implemented in OLPC's XO laptops. That effort was led by Jepsen, who formerly was OLPC's chief technology 312-0386 laptop battery officer and contributed to a patent in low-power screen design.

She stirred up a controversy when she left nonprofit OLPC in 2007 to start the for-profit Pixel Qi, with the goal to create a US$75 laptop using technologies she invented at OLPC. The company is now focusing on development of low-power screens.

Give Your Laptop Battery a Longer Lease on Life

Does your laptop spend more time on your desk than your laptop laptop battery? If so, you're probably causing your battery to wear out much sooner than it needs to.

See, it's a sad (and expensive) fact of life: You're lucky to get 18-24 months from a battery before it loses a good chunk of its charge capacity (meaning it no longer powers your laptop for as long as it used to).

And you're accelerating this unfortunate timeframe if you leave your laptop Latitude D830 plugged in 24/7, which is common for most folks who work at a desk. Because the MM165 battery rarely (if ever) gets a chance to discharge, it loses its capacity to hold a charge.

The simple solution: Pull the battery out of the laptop and leave it out when you're deskbound. Most laptops can run on straight AC power, so there's no need for the battery. And it's easy enough to pop back in when you hit the road (though obviously you'll want to make sure it's charged, so plan ahead a bit).

It's a hassle, sure, but consider the price of a replacement YD626 battery: usually US$100 or more. What's more, old, discarded batteries wreak havoc on landfills. Sooner or later, they'll leak acid into the ground. So it's in your best interests to keep your battery as long as possible, and to keep it from dying a premature death.

Everyone wants longer battery life, within reason there are some tricks to help get the most out of your laptop's battery.

One fact we all have to accept is that laptop battery life degrades over time. While modern Lithium Ion 312-0393 batteries found in laptops today are much more resistant to degradation they do still lose performance after a couple of years.

After 3 years of reasonable use you will be entering the stage of possible total Latitude D800 battery failure.

Dell unveils Latitude laptop

Dell on Tuesday announced a series of Latitude laptops, including its lightest ultramobile commercial GD761 laptop laptop battery yet and a larger system that the company claimed provides 19 hours of battery life.

The company's Latitude E6400 runs for as much as 10 hours on a single nine-cell battery, and an additional battery that snaps on to the bottom of the laptop adds as much as nine hours of battery life, Dell officials said at a press event in San Francisco. That gives users close to a full day of laptop use without carrying an AC adapter to recharge the batteries.

Dell has developed proprietary laptop battery laptop battery technology to boost battery life in the laptop, said Jeff Clarke, senior vice president and general manager at Dell. The technology focuses on making components suck less power from the battery, Clarke said. For example, the refresh rate of a screen is reduced under certain conditions. Dell needed to develop related software and work with component manufacturers to enable these capabilities.

The company has also added those power-saving features to other Latitude models, but a Dell spokesman wouldn't say whether they would also be available on the Inspiron line of consumer laptops. The battery life was measured using standard industry benchmarks, Dell officials said.

The Latitude E6400 comes with a 14.1-inch screen and runs an Intel Core 2 Duo processor. It can have as much as 8G bytes of RAM and 250G bytes of storage. The system Inspiron E1505 laptop battery comes preloaded with Windows Vista, with an option to downgrade to Windows XP. It is priced starting at US$1,139. The Latitude E6500, a similar laptop with a larger screen, was also announced, starting at $1,169. Both systems are available immediately.

Dell has also added some other power-related enhancements to new laptops and said it would offer a smaller and lighter AC adapter that enables batteries to recharge more quickly. Some of the new Latitudes will also be able to recharge consumer electronics, such as a Inspiron 6400 laptop battery cell phone, via USB (Universal Serial Bus) without the laptop being switched on, according to the company.

In addition, Dell announced new ultraportable laptops, including the Latitude E4200, which the company said is its smallest and lightest commercial laptop to date. It comes with a 12.1-inch screen and weighs just under 2.2 pounds (1 kilogram). Another ultraportable, the Latitude E4300, has a 13.3-inch screen and weighs 3.3 pounds. Both are powered by Intel Core 2 Duo ultra-low voltage (ULV) processors running between 1.40GHz and 2.40GHz. Pricing information has not been announced, but the laptops will be available in the coming weeks, a Dell spokesman Inspiron 8600 laptop battery said.

Future ultramobile Latitudes could feature Dell's On technology, with which users will be able to access the Web, e-mail messages and contacts without loading the operating system, the company said. Dell previewed the technology at the event but didn't give complete details.

Dell rounded out Tuesday's announcements 8N544 laptop battery with budget and semi-rugged Latitude laptops. The E5400 and E5500 laptops, available immediately, come with a variety of screen sizes, with prices starting at $839. The semi-rugged E6400 ATG laptop, which meets the U.S. Army's standards to withstand dust and humidity, will be available next week starting at $2,399.

Dell has seen its laptop shipments grow since it signed up retailers worldwide to sell them, a move away from its Web-based sales model. It is the second-largest PC retailer behind HP, shipping 11.56 million units in the second quarter for a 16.4 percent market share, according to IDC. That represented a 21.4 percent year-over-year Inspiron 8500 laptop battery increase, IDC said.

Toshiba plans big production jump for fast charging battery

IDG News Service — Toshiba is planning a big increase in production of a new type of Lithium Ion 312-0292 battery that can charge to 90 percent of its capacity in a few minutes and is highly-resistant to short circuits.

The Super Charge Ion Battery (SCIB) is a Lithium Ion battery based on proprietary technology developed by the company and is targeted at both industrial and electric vehicle applications and consumer laptop computer use.

Production of the battery, which has been in development for several years, has already begun for the industrial market at the relatively low volume of 150,000 cells per month.

Toshiba will increase that to laptop battery laptop battery several tens of millions of cells per month at a new factory it plans to build in Kashiwazaki in Niigata prefecture in north west Japan, it said Wednesday. Construction of the factory will begin in late 2009 and production is scheduled to begin a year later, said Hiroko Mochida, a Toshiba spokeswoman.

Initial production at the factory, which represents an investment of several tens of billions laptop battery of yen (several hundred million US dollars), will likely be aimed at the industrial and electric vehicle markets although the same lines will be able to make SCIBs for Inspiron 2200 laptop computers, she said.

At September's Ceatec show in Japan Toshiba demonstrated a laptop running on an SCIB. Each SCIB cell offers a nominal voltage of 2.4 volts and a capacity of 4.2 ampere hours. Ten of them are typical combined to make a battery for industrial use and less would be required for a laptop battery.

Kashiwazaki along TD347 laptop battery with the neighboring city of Kariwa is perhaps best known as site of the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power Plant, which is the largest nuclear power plant in the world by output. The plant is currently idle after a magnitude 6.6 earthquake took it off line in July 2007.

Toshiba said it chose Kashiwazaki because of the city's promotion of plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles and associated businesses. As part of that promotion Toshiba will receive KD476 laptop battery certain subsidies from the city.

Panasonic halves size of prototype laptop fuel cell

IDG News Service — Engineers at Panasonic have succeeded in reducing the size of a prototype laptop battery methanol fuel cell so that it's no larger than a laptop battery pack but provides all-day power.

The fuel cell, which the Japanese company has been developing for the last eight years, was first shown at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January 2006. At that time it was about double the size of a laptop battery, but the Latitude X300 battery latest version, due to be unveiled later this week at an event in Japan, is half the size, Panasonic said Monday.

The new version has a volume of 270 cubic centimeters and can deliver an average power of 10 watts with a peak output of 20 watts, Panasonic said. It weighs 320 grams.

On a 200cc charge of methanol it should be able to deliver power for 20 hours -- considerably longer than the Lithium Ion BAT3151L8 batteries used in laptop PCs today -- and when the methanol gets low all that's required is a quick refill and it's back to full capacity. This fast recharge is seen as one of the key advantages of direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs). They are also viewed as more environmentally friendly than Lithium Ion batteries because the only by-product is a little water and carbon dioxide.

Additionally Panasonic has also developed a stand-alone DMFC charger that has a couple of USB power outlets and can be used to recharge dead gadgets such as iPods and cell phones when away from a power socket. The recharger is slightly larger at 360cc and 1G222 battery weighs 350 grams.

Both will get their first public showing at the Hydrogen Energy Advanced Technology Exhibition 2008 that is due to open Wednesday in the western Japanese city of Fukuoka.

Neither is likely to go on sale soon. Panasonic doesn't have any firm plans for commercialization but said it hopes to have them on the market INSPIRON 2650 battery by the end of 2012.

A handful of big-name consumer electronics companies have been developing DMFCs for the last several years, but are yet to bring the products to market. For the last few years most companies have vaguely stated "next year" as a commercialization date but it's an answer that's given no matter when asked.

That might be about to change. Toshiba recently made the clearest promise yet to DMFC commercialization: sometime during its current financial year, which ends in March 2009. At the recent Ceatec show in Japan the company demonstrated a working cell phone that included a DMFC, but INSPIRON 2600 battery Toshiba isn't letting on yet if this will be its first product.

Conclusion

The ASUS Eee PC Aspire One Netbook is a must-have item for computer enthusiasts and early adopters. It's small, light and USB 337607-001 expandable. With Ubuntu Linux pre-installed it's the perfect travel machine.

To say the ASUS netbook is smaller than a traditional laptop is an understatement. It weighs in at a mere 2 pounds and has a 8.9 inch screen. It's about an inch thick and is smaller than many of the technical books I carry with me when I travel.

As a gadget, it's out of this world; as a functional laptop, I'm not so sure. However, the netbook is not billed to replace a laptop, so that expectation isn't really fair.

In fact, it's more for useful as a tool for connecting to the Internet, getting e-mail, using Skype and Messenger, and having access to wireless networks and Internet radio. You can also edit the occassional document or presentation, connect to an Ethernet Laptop Battery network, connect to a larger display, and even connect USB peripherals. If you think you can make this work when you travel, this product is for you.

I purchased the Netbook model featuring Linux. It runs Ubuntu, which is an easy-to-use interface that includes tabs for Internet, Work, Learn, Play, Settings, and Favorites.

The Internet tab offers icons for Web Mail, Web, iGoogle, Google Search, Messenger, Skype, Network, Google Docs, World Clock, Wikipedia, Internet Radio, and Wireless networks.

The Work tab offers Open Office 2.0 icons, including but not limited to Documents, Spreadsheets, Presentations, and PDF Reader. There's a File Manager icon too, as well as a Dictionary and a place to write notes. T

he Learn tab offers icons for Science, Language, Math, and Paint, among others, and these are great tools if you have a child and want to keep them Pavilion ZT3000 occupied while you travel.

My only problem with purchasing this particular netbook is that the hard drive is only 16 GB. The exact same model running XP Home had a 160 GB hard drive. No, that's not a typo. Why go for the 16 GB model then?

For starters, the 16 GB hard drive is solid state like a flash drive. It doesn't spin, and that means it's difficult to damage. It also uses very little battery power. If I wanted to, I could put it in my checked baggage, but who would need to? It's tiny! But, the ASUS has all the USB ports I need.

But why Linux? Well, I really wanted to try something new. Linux is cool, and although it may take me some time to get completely comfortable with EV087AA it, the interface is intuitive.

Just click the tab and click the icon for the utility in the resulting window. Settings, for instance, offers icons for Printers, Add/Remove Software, Disk Utility, and Diagnostic Tools. There's even a voice command option.

This model also seems to run quickly for its size and price. I inserted an SD disk with 350 pictures and hit the slideshow button. To me it seemed just as good in quality and speed as any laptop I'd ever used.

My new ASUS Eee PC - Aspire One, is just about the coolest thing I've ever seen. For an early Pavilion dv9000(hp dv9000 battery) adopter like me, it's a must-have.

Any potential purchaser of an ultra light, ultra thin notebooks will look very closely at devices with a slick design build and mobility. This means weight distribution, balance, feel, and control are key factors in the purchase decision. The Lifebook has a responsive touchpad and excellent fingerprint scanner both of which are situated neatly and don’t hinder use. There are also four ‘quick access’ buttons for notebook configuration. The ‘E’ button turns on ‘Eco mode’, providing information about functions, devices and power saving options. The ‘R’ button provides access to run the backup and restore support utility. A third button provides quick access to the Lifebook’s configuration panel to tweak screen display, power VGP-BPS3 battery management setting and HDD shock protection. A fourth button provides quick access to sign-on, sign-off and shutdown.

Powered by an Intel 2GHz processor and 1GB memory as standard, the Fujitsu Siemens Lifebook is suitably quick, and there is flexibility to install a 1.8, 2.2, or 2.4GHz processor and expansion slots for up to 4GB RAM. This personalization of specification is a considerable advantage and is not currently offered by others such as the Apple Macbook Air. The Lifebook also comes with Windows Vista Business as standard, which requires 1GB RAM, and if possible 2GB, for seamless performance.

With such a spec (and compared to the Dell XPS 1330) this is no gaming or advanced multimedia notebook. It is a practical, professional, business oriented device and in this regard the standard 80GB HDD is disappointing. It is certainly advisable to upgrade to a 120GB or 160GB HDD if you are going to require extensive storage capacity of multimedia or information. As for dynamics, all three HDD’s run at 5400rpm and are shock protected to prevent data loss or corruption due to bumps and bruises. You can even configure HDD shock sensitivity depending on your VGP-BPL2 battery logistics.

With Wired Ethernet, Wireless A/B/G and Draft-N, Infrared, Bluetooth and in built 3G connectivity the Lifebook caters for a wide range of communications standards. Although the eight hours as advertised by Fujitsu Siemens is stretching it a bit, the standard six cell battery will easily deliver four hours of memory intensive battery life and five hours during normal use. Conclusion

Inside the Laptop

The MSI Wind is another elegantly designed laptop with a great looking chassis and resilient component design. That said the MSI Wind does provide the best in class user experience for handling, transporting and keyboard/touchpad manipulation. It hosts a wonderful extended keyboard which is very comfortable to use and the processor offers good all round performance across the Windows XP platform. However it only has one accessible expansion slot, and low end storage capacity. But for those who want a truly mobile computing experience, incredible flexibility and a wonderfully balanced keyboard experience, then the HDD VGP-BPS10 battery and shortened battery life can be discounted to some degree. And let's be honest- for the student body as a whole, they can work around a small hard drive capacity and use adapter power the vast majority of the time anyway. APC Back-UPS ES 750G Back-up Battery System Review

Does your PC or laptop seem to bristle with accessories like external drives, a sound Laptop Battery system, printer, and flat-bed scanner? Have you wished for an easy way to turn off all these accessories at once - with the computer itself? Here we look at a smart backup power supply that can do this and more.

Introduction

This is a review of the American Power Conversion Back-UPS model ES 750G. The "G" in the name stands for "green." At a MSRP of $99.99, APC claims that the unit will pay for itself in about two years. How can it do this? One way is that it provides a centralized location for your computer's power connection and all the peripheral connections, too. A master/controlled outlet feature senses when the computer has been shut off (or hibernated) and smartly shuts down up to three accessories automatically. This translates into savings by reducing so-called, seldom considered "phantom loads" or parasitic power loss. Internally, the unit has a "high frequency design" that minimizes the use of copper. A total of ten surge-protected outlets are provided, as well as protection for cable (coax) and DSL PA3331U-1BRS battery and/or phone line.

Let's get the ES-750G unboxed and hooked up, and try it out.

Packaging and Unboxing Rating

The backup power supply was sent directly from APC in West Kingston, Rhode Island. It came protected by a cardboard box with the retail box inside it, and it arrived without damage or missing parts.

Inside the box was the device itself, a literature package, and cables for USB (to communicate with the PC), cable, and DSL or phone. A prominent yellow sticker proclaimed, "Stop," and advised that the battery should be hooked up before plugging the PA3166U-1BRS battery unit in. A thoughtful inclusion was a black hook-and-loop strap with the APC logo in red. It was very handy for organizing the power cords that plugged into the APC and directing them to the PC.

The first step involved in setting up the Back-UPS was to remove it from the shipping bag, turn it over, and connect the battery leads. We found a detailed quality control checklist taped directly to the side of the unit.

A push of a thumb on the release tab slides off the battery cover. We found that it was easiest to slide the battery up onto the rim to connect the power wire. (For safety reasons, the unit is shipped with the positive red power wire disconnected.)

The battery should be charged for at least 16 hours, the manual says, before it will provide a full-length runtime on just the APC's power. They note that it also PA3191U-1BRS battery charges as long as it is plugged in, whether the switch on the unit is on or off.

Hooking Up Surge-Protected Non-AC Connections

All of the non-AC accessory connections are made on the power-plug end of the Back-UPS. There is also a line-fault indicator. If this indicator illuminates, stop and have an electrician check your wiring before you continue. You may want to unplug your PC and expensive accessories in the meantime, too.

The Back-UPS provides surge protection for two-line phone inputs, including DSL. To be effective, the line from the wall jack should be plugged into the center phone line port before the third port is connected to the DSL modem. Basically, the Back UPS shuts off power to the controlled outlets when it senses that the component plugged into the master outlet has been turned off. (We'll touch on this a little more when we look at optimizing the Back UPS for use with a laptop.) The notion is that things like monitors, printers, scanners, and external drives continue to draw power when not in use. The flip side of this is that you should not plug accessories into the controlled outlets that you want to continue to run after the computer shuts down. But despite all those advantages, solid state hard drives have one big disadvantage - Price. OCZ is one of the new leaders in SSD technologies, and like many companies competing in this space, OCZ's attempts come as direct result of its experience selling various RAM products. That said, there are significant parts of SSDs which do not directly relate to experience producing RAM. The reason why Intel managed to quickly become one of the most difficult competitors in this market is that the processor used to control the SSD is just as important as the quality of memory used in the SSD. Intel's past experience designing processors gave them a huge pool of experience to draw from.

The Vertex Series debuted this year, and it was highly Satellite A75 battery anticipated by those watching the SSD market because it uses the Indilinix Barefoot controller chip to manage the hard drive operation's. This new controller was marketed as being the key to OCZ's new Vertex Series drives, which the company clearly hoped could compete directly with Intel in terms of performance. As it turns out, OCZ has managed to defy its under-dog status and wow most reviewers. While the Vertex Series drives are not quite as fast as Intel's M-series, they're extremely close, and they do overtake that popular Intel product in some tests. The OCZ Vertex drives have a snappy feel and provided good sustained read and write speeds. The Vertex drives also provide some the fastest boot times of any SSD available; Windows XP can come to life in under 15 seconds. And while all of this performance is impressive, the price is equally inspiring, as the 30GB Vertex can be had for well under $150 bucks.

Super Talent MasterDrive OX 16GB

Let me make one thing clear - the MasterDrive OX is not a high performance SSD. Some reviewers of this particular SSD have found that its sustained read and write speeds are not notably better than what you will find from a 7200RPM mechanical hard drive. In the SSD world, this means that the MasterDrive OX is something of a sloth, and it is has received its fair share of knocks against it for these Satellite A70 battery performance flaws. The flaws are just, and are likely the result of a controller chip which is poorly designed.

However, the MasterDrive OX 16GB drive is only $74.99. That is highly affordable, and while the drive lacks the high sustained performance that most expect from SSDs, it still retains a number of other desirable traits, the most important of which is random access times. Random access time is a measure of how quickly a drive can find completely unrelated data stored in its memory, and even low-performance SSDs like the MasterDrive OX have a major advantage over mechanical drives here. This advantage translates to the ultra-quick feel associated with SSDs.

So while the MasterDrive OX is probably a bad fit for a desktop or a laptop meant as a desktop replacement, it is a good choice for a light, mobile laptop meant for simple duties like word processing and web-surfing. Put in such a role, the MasterDrive's main weakness would not be noticeable, giving the user an experience nearly equal to high-end SSDs at a fraction of the price.

Intel X25-M

You may be surprised to see this drive on Satellite A100 battery this list. True, the drive's price of $363.00 makes its affordability questionable. It costs far more than the either two drives here, and in fact costs more than nearly any other single piece of hardware a person could buy.

But the Intel X25-M makes the list for two reasons. The first is that there is no reason to recommend anything else. The OCZ Vertex series is exceptional, and if your budget is anywhere between $100 and $300 dollars, then you should probably buy a drive that is part of the Vertex series. OCZ offers capacities of up to 120GB, which means there is probably a Vertex Series drive near your price point. There is nothing quite as good until you get up to Intel's X25-M, which is a better product for the price.

The other reason is to exhibit how quickly prices are dropping. At launch, this drive routinely cost over $500 dollars. Only a few months later, Newegg is happily Satellite A10 offering it for only a hair over $350 dollars. If budget is your primary concern, then the X25-M is still not the drive to buy. But if bang-for-your-buck is just as important, then the X25-M is a strong contender. And with the SSD market rapidly evolving, these prices have no where to go but down. Volumes will increase, costs will be stream-lined. This drive will likely retail under $200 dollars within the next six months.

So there you have it - the Intel X25-M is winning a sort of rhetorical victory. Currently, it is not ultra-affordable. But if the OCZ Vertex Drives or the Super Talent MasterDrive just don't grab your attention, and you don't want to pay for an Intel X25-M, you always have the option to sit back and wait for SSD prices to level out, as you shouldn't have to wait for long.

What's Hot:

I've spoken previously about the features Laptop Battery available via Add-On packs and my views about them. In fairness to CyberLink PowerDVD 7.0, I'll be going over just the product features available in the Standard offering. Even without those Add-On packs, you'll probably be more than satisfied with your investment because there is a plethora of unique options available to make the most of your DVD viewing experience.

Cyberlink has some dedicated options for the improvement of video quality. As more users are connecting their PC's to a variety of higher quality and larger displays, the demands on the software players has grown. To deal with that, Cyberlink uses their own decoder and image technology, called Cyberlink Eagle Vision (CLEV). CLEV is designed to brighten and enhance colors, as well as providing a smoother Satellite 2100 interface whether on a standard display, or on a stretched 16:9 (widescreen high definition) television set.

Cyberlink touts a number of other control and viewing features, some of which are nice, and some of which you probably wouldn't use very often. The zoom and bookmark features are great, allowing you to remember and go to specific scenes. Other items such as "Say it Again" allows you to repeat the last line seem no more than a quick rewind feature. I can't imagine many people requiring or using it on a regular basis unless they have lost some of their hearing capabilities in combat, for instance.

What's Not:

I'm a little less impressed with the Satellite A65 battery audio features. With the standard offering, you get a very limited number of options. You do receive their "Multi-Environment Impression," which is technology to utilize eight channels of audio, but it lacks all the standard surround sound technologies any audiophile will require. Cyberlink may counter this argument with their Audio Add-On, but it would have been a good gesture to at least include a well known Dolby or other sound technology with the included price of Standard.

Help & Support Rating

What's Hot:

Cyberlink provides a few support and help options for its customers of PowerDVD 7.0 Standard. They provide your basic offerings of FAQs, as well as email options for technical support through a web form. Not having a forum is an odd omission for a company that has a large number of high-end customers. I actually find forums to be extremely useful because customers share support inquiries and this Satellite A60-662 battery should, therefore, lower the overall number of support requests.

What's Not:

Essentially, Cyberlink does not provide telephone support. Technically, they do offer voice support between the hours of 1pm to 10pm, Central time. That is the good news. The insulting news is that they only provide support for people who have purchased their Support Package. This is an outrageous price of $29.95, for two months of telephone support. That is offensive considering the software itself only costs $49.95. I can understand the rising cost of domestic support, but even a case by case offering, say $5 or $10 per call would at least be more agreeable than almost $30. You have two months of unlimited calls, but how often do you foresee the need to call in two months? It's a paltry offering from a company I've come to expect more from, and hopefully one Satellite 1900 battery that will change in time.

Suggested Features

A requirement for myself, would be a 10 inch interface. Any user that hooks this up to their television set will not want to be constrcited to using a mouse. In addition to that, simplify the buying process for people. Either go with a variety of versions, or choose the add-on packs. To have both is both confusing and frustrating (for reviewers as well as customers). I suggest they either remove telephone support or add a less insulting pay scale model.

Conclusion

Let's be clear on at least one Tecra 9100 battery point. Cyberlink makes the least amount of money from it's bare basic Standard version of it's PowerDVD 7.0. That's the only reason I see why they would possibly make it as confusing a purchasing experience as possible. With such a variety of more expensive versions, then Add-On packs which provide various other features (some of which are included and others not), it can be disconcerting. Just making heads or tails of what you're getting for the $49.95 is challenging enough, consequently, it's a good thing that the product itself is very simple to use. Once you have it up and running, you can tweak it if you need to, or just leave the default. I found both settings more than viewable and better than what a cheap $50 DVD player could provide.

If you're in the market for a basic software DVD player and don't need any bells or whistles, you could do much worse that Cyberlink's Standard Tecra 9000 battery offering. Then again you could do better too.

Cyberlink PowerDVD 7.0 Standard is a great option if you need some quality DVD Laptop Battery playback from a reputable source. Assuming you can piece together the software you need, it can eventually be your dream DVD solution for your computer.

Introduction

Cyberlink PowerDVD 7.0 is the latest offering of this software. When you hear about the pricing options of Cyberlink's PowerDVD 7 Standard, you will either love it or hate it. Cyberlink offers an a la carte offering to its base model DVD player, at the "low" cost of $49.95. A pretty decent price for a quality, feature-rich piece of software. However, buyer beware because Cyberlink has tried its best to confuse the marketplace by offering various versions of its PowerDVD product and then offering add-on packages for additional costs. I will elaborate more on the price structure below. To be fair, there are a ton of features in this Standard offering that could do more than just satisfy the base ThinkPad T41 battery customer. If that is the case then the $50 is a steal.

Price to Value Rating

What's Hot:

When comparing the offerings of other DVD Players, $49.95 for the CyberLink PowerDVD 7 Standard version is more than reasonable. For that amount, you get a reliable player with some pretty neat features.

I'm not going to go into the price comparison of a software DVD player versus a stand alone DVD player. I'm a firm proponent of the superior video qualities of software DVD players, so it's really an apples and oranges comparison.

What's Not:

As complicated as it is to select from the different DVD players at your local retailer, it's even more difficult to decipher which package of Cyberlink PowerDVD is right for you. Moreover, once a ThinkPad T40 battery choice is made, you need to evaluate all of the available add-ons. Some might appreciate the extra features not bundled with the software which drivie the cost up. However, it's hard to justify the overall price if those features you require begin to unreasonably jack up the price.

If you're not pleased with the basic audio included in standard you can purchase the Advanced Audio Pack. This includes an impressive arsenal of audio codecs which will give you DTS:Neo 6 decoding, all the way up to Dolby Digital EX 7.1 Audio, and everything in-between. It's a fantastic pack, but it will cost $39.95 for Standard users. That's almost the price of Standard.

That's not all folks. If you are a FPCBP95 laptop battery user, Cyberlink is kind enough to offer you a Mobility Pack, which will give you three power-saving options. These are designed to let your laptop battery last longer during movie watching time. All this for only an additional $19.95.

The third and final pack (for now) is the HD264 pack, which will grant you access to playback MPEG-4 AVC (also known as H.264) files. These are a popular video format for the Apple users. If your friends use Macs they will probably need this one which is a bummer considering that Cyberlink charges $39.95 for this single file format.

If you're adding it up along the way, that's a total of $99.85 in upgrades alone. The grand total is $149.80. That's a lot of money to spend on DVD player software. Although these packs are optional, these missing features in the base configuration are available in competitors base FPCBP63 battery offerings.

Installation & Setup Rating

What's Hot:

The installation & configuration of CyberLink PowerDVD 7.0 Standard is a real treat. For a program with as many features and such a high quality reputation, it's nice to see a fairly simple and clear process. The installation is standard, you're prompted for registration and then your user key to unlock access to your version.

From the configuration screen, you can customize the user interface, change the skin and modify a wealth of other configurations to suit your viewing environment.

Users who want even more control are able to dive into the Advanced Audio and Video Properties and then customize the player even further. Although not for the faint of heart, it's an awful lot of fun to play with and tweak because in the end you can really get your performance to look exactly as you desire.

The entire setup experience is appropriate to the reputation Cyberlink has established. It satisfies the entire spectrum of users from basic to expert allowing more control than FPCBP68 battery you would probably ever need.

User Interface Rating

What's Hot:

The user interface of Cyberlink PowerDVD 7.0 is pretty good. The buttons are clearly placed and viewing full screen is as easy as a click on the top right, or simply double-clicking the movie playing.

The interface as well is a fairly standard beige design but Cyberlink offers a fairly neat feature in their downloadable skins. By default, you can select from three included skins, and I'm hoping there will be more to come down the line. It's a little odd that there is so few FPCBP77 battery choices and no instructions or methods for uploading your own. However, it's still a pretty nice addition which not many competitors have. Then again, users viewing in full screen mode will rarely ever notice the skin of the player.

In addition, even in full screen mode, by right-clicking you have access to the full wealth of options. Everything from subtitles, audio selection, to the controls such as fast forward or skipping chapters are there. It's all easily accessible with a mouse.

What's Not:

The biggest disappointment with Cyberlink PowerDVD 7.0 Standard is the lack of remote capabilities. As Imentioned earlier, I am a huge proponent of Home FPCBP80 battery Theater PCs (HTPCs), which refers to hooking up computers to your home theater and your big screen television. This operation enables you to playback your movie files from your computer. This is the reason Windows Media Center has sold so many copies. It puzzles me that Cyberlink not only omits a plugin for Media Center, but they include no way to control the interface via remote.

Technically, if you have a remote with mouse controls, or basic playback controls, you can at least have the bare minimum playback abilities. I think that it's one very large omission for a commercial offering at a less-than-cheap price. Even competitors who refuse to design for Fujitsu Laptop Battery Media Center have at least understood their customers' needs enough to design their own ten inch UI which is usable with a standard PC remote. If you don't mind using your mouse 100% of the time, it's a solid and fun interface to play around with.

Best Ultraportable Business Laptop - Lenovo X200

Those who are looking for a business laptop that they can take anywhere will want an ultraportable. Again, the Thinkpad series conquers what little opposition exists with its X200 business ultraportable.

What is most remarkable about the X200 is how little the feel of the laptop differs from the larger T400 model. The X200 is thinner and lighter, yes, but these things do not translate into a more cramped experience or a laptop which feels less durable. Taken side-by-side, the X200 simply looks like a Thinkpad which has been put under a shrink-ray. The keyboard remains superb and the build quality impeccable. The only catch is that the X200 offers no trackpad. The trackpoint works ThinkPad R50 battery very well - some users such as myself have come to prefer it over a traditional touchpad solution on any laptop - but it will take some getting used to.

The X200 isn't priced as high as one might think, either, with the base models coming in at just over a thousand dollars. That is quite a bit more than a netbook, an those looking at an X200 who are not actually business users might want to consider a 12" netbook over a true business ultraportable like the X200. But netbook solutions simply do not offer the same level of quality. The X200's battery life is superb, as well - equipped with a 9-cell battery, it is capable of up to 10 hours of battery life.

Best Budget Business Laptop - Acer Timeline Series

While Acer's new Timeline series of laptops is not marketed as a business product, it is easy to see why the Acer Timeline would fit in among the standard business ThinkPad T43 laptop fair. Clad in a gunmetal finish and super-slim, the Acer Timeline AS3810T is interesting but understated, attracting perhaps a second glance but never looking scandalous. The AS3810T looks as rugged from a distance as a Lenovo product to boot, although it doesn't compare on closer inspection.

The main reason to recommend the Acer Timeline is that it soundly thrashes any similar product offered from the business-oriented branches of Lenovo, HP, and other common business laptop manufactuers. Its 13" screen is bright and has decent viewing angles, and while the island-style keyboard ThinkPad T42 feels mushy, it seems durable enough. The large trackpad is better than average, as well.

Where the Acer Timeline AS3810T really impresses, however, is its combination of size, battery life, and price. With a 13.3" screen and eight hours of battery life from a standard six-cell battery, this laptop is nearly as portable as the Lenovo X200. Yet it costs only $599.99, making it an amazing value. Those looking for the same great battery life but who desire a larger screen can look into the 14" and 15.6" models, which offer a cheaper alternative to the Lenovo T series.

Mac Energy Saver Settings

Trying to save the environment or just trying to save on the electricity bill? If you're one of the millions to own a Mac, there are some simple things you can do to optimize your Laptop Battery computer's power usage.

Easy Power Savings

Trying to save a few bucks on the monthly power bill? If you've got a Mac there are many simple options available to reduce the overall cost of using your computer.

The first task is to open the System Preferences and click on the Energy Saver icon. Depending on whether you have a desktop or a laptop, you'll have a couple options available. All Mac computers have the following options:

Put the computer to sleep when inactive for...

Put the display(s) to sleep when inactive for...

Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible

Put the computer to 92P1089 battery sleep...

For most users, their computer does not need to be active and running all the time. This is a common point of energy waste for any computer, whether PC, Mac, Desktop, or Laptop. This option will put your computer to sleep automatically assuming there are no programs running that require it to stay awake. The effect is the same as if you manually clicked the Apple logo and chose "Sleep".

The best option here is to consider the amount of time you'd typically be away from your system before returning. If you are often distracted from a computing task (by kids, pets, the doorbell, and so on,) setting this value to 20-30 minutes will be sufficient. Even in the situation of my Mac Mini media server this option makes sense. I'm not constantly using the hard drives even though I leave the computer enabled. This allows me to save some power usage while still keeping the data easily available.

Laptop Computers

It's worth noting that if you have a laptop, you have another option available. In addition to the "Power Adapter" setting, you also have the options for behavior based on the "Battery" setting. This means you can easily have separate behavior based on whether your computer is plugged in - just select which of the four options makes the most sense for you. On my MacBook Pro, I have "Better 08K8195 Battery Life" selected (Note, this is analogous to the "Better Energy Savings" option when plugged in) and works beautifully for most of tasks.

There is also an Options section that mostly defines how the computer will behave in certain circumstances. For example, if you select the "Better Battery Life", there is a setting that will slightly dim the display preserving a bit more battery life.

One final note of advice - if you're trying to reduce power usage and you have laptop computers, make sure to unplug them in the evening if they are not being used (ie, are asleep.) The power adapter will draw electricity even when the 08K8214 battery is fully charged, wasting energy further.

Save Power and The Planet - How to Set Your Computer's Power Options

In the first of a two-part series we look at how to set your computer's power options to avoid wasting Laptop Battery power when you aren't using it.

Windows XP

You’ll find XP’s built-in power options by going into the control panel, choosing the ‘Performance and maintenance section’, then selecting ‘Power Options’. This will give you the choice of switching from the default High Performance settings to either Automatic or 92P1077 Battery Saver modes. Be aware that this may affect your machine’s performance, so you might have to experiment for a while and see if any trade-off is worthwhile.

Windows Vista

You no longer need to choose between the Hibernation mode and a total shut-down: the new Sleep mode combines the benefits of the two. It saves the necessary data about your current work to your disk rather than the computer memory. This means your computer can pretty much stop drawing power while it’s in Sleep, but can get you up and working much quicker when you come back to your 92P1102 machine.

Sleep mode is now the default mode when you leave your machine unattended for a fixed time, so think very carefully about changing this setting. In particular, opting to run a screensaver is a costly choice: doing so costs an average of $11 a year in extra power.

Corporate Windows users

If you have Vista on your network, you no longer 08K8196 need to rely on old-fashioned nagging to persuade users to shut down their machines when not in use. Vista allows you to set power management options centrally. And don’t forget you can now put machines into Sleep mode remotely without worrying about losing any data if users haven’t saved their work properly.

Mac OS

You can separately set how long the screen and the computer itself can be inactive before going into sleep mode. Linux

Laptop Battery Recalls: It's not over yet

In 2006, Sony issued a battery recall that affected nearly every brand of laptop Laptop Battery available. Now a second, smaller recall has been issued. If your laptop was purchased before September of 2006, it may have a defective battery.

A Blast From The Past

In September 2006, a massive 02K7039 laptop battery recall was announced by Sony. This recall sent a wave across the entire industry, because besides selling laptops, Sony also does a great deal of business developing laptop battery technology for sale to other countries. The battery recalls in 2006 effected laptops made by virtually every laptop manufacturer, including Apple, Acer, Toshiba, Fujitsu, Dell, Hewlett-Packard, Lenovo and of course Sony. In total, around 10 million batteries were recalled.

The problem was rare, but severe. Anyone who has held a laptop on their lap for an hour or two at a time has probably felt the warmth generated by the computer 02K6620 and wondered if it could possibly catch itself, or something around it, on fire. In the case of the Sony laptop battery recall, that is exactly what happened. The batteries in a small number of computers caught fire or exploded. A few people suffered moderate to minor burns, and some property damage was caused by these detonating laptops.

That however was in 2006, and the problem has since been largely forgotten. But it apparently has yet to be entirely resolved.

Now what? A New Round of Recalls

It seems that not all the potentially explosive 02K6928 batteries were included in the previous recall. The newest recall, announced late this year, includes around 100,000 batteries, all of which were made in the same time period of the previous ten million. In comparison to the numbers of batteries originally recalled, the number is quite small. Less laptop brands are in the scope of this recall than the previous one, and it appears that most of the newly recalled laptops come from Dell, Hewlett-Packard or Toshiba. However, the laptops that are being recalled by these manufactures were not included in any 02K6651 previous recall, which means models previously thought safe are now at risk.

There is some good news, though. As mentioned, these batteries were made in the same period as the batteries previously recalled, which means anyone who purchased a laptop after September 2006 should be safe.

Is My Laptop Recalled?

The easiest way to find out if your laptop has been recalled is to contact the manufacturer. Keep in mind that you need to contact the manufacturer of your laptop, not Sony, the manufacturer of the batteries (unless your laptop was built by Sony). The complete list of recalled laptops does not seem to be listed anywhere on the Internet, and this is likely because the number of different models recalled is, at this point, extremely large. However, each manufacturer does have a FRU 92P1137 comprehensive list of what models are affected, and this information is available online. Below are the recall programs of some of the larger companies with laptops involved in the recalls:

If you find out that your laptop has a recalled battery, it is best to stop using the battery at once. The risk of explosion is low, but real, and every manufacturer will request that you stop using your FRU 92P1141 laptop battery once you contact them for a replacement.

Maximize Battery Life Without Installing Anything

Sharp has joined the ranks of laptop manufacturers recalling troublesome batteries

On Monday, Sharp became the latest TravelMate 240 company to announce plans to recall lithium-ion batteries manufactured by Sony, adding to the long and growing list of companies recalling such batteries.

Sony also appears to be facing widespread claims for compensation from several laptop manufacturers, including Toshiba, Hitachi and Fujitsu, according to reports.

Sharp is recalling 28,000 BTP-60A1 battery packs. "We decided to recall the batteries to ensure safety for our customers," company spokesman Hiroshi Takenami told the Associated Press. The recall was made when the company discovered the batteries could short-circuit, which could lead to overheating.

Fujitsu has announced it is replacing 51,000 more Sony laptop batteries, following a similar recall of 287,000 BTP-58A1 laptop batteries earlier this month.

Fujitsu also said it might be seeking compensation for damages for the cost of recalling the batteries. All companies involved with the battery recalls, which also include Lenovo, Apple Computer and Dell, are expecting Sony to cover the direct costs associated with the process. Now some suppliers may be seeking compensation for the indirect costs, such as the cost of damage to corporate reputations.

According to the AP, Fujitsu is assessing the TravelMate 220 "extent of damage to determine whether to seek (other) compensation," while Toshiba is considering seeking compensation "to cover damages to its product image and missed sales opportunities."

Hitachi reportedly is also seeking compensation from Sony after its own product recall earlier this month. The AP quoted a company representative saying that Hitachi is waiting to finish the recall BTP-43D1 before deciding on any compensation moves.

Clean your desk. It sounds strange, but if you have a dusty, dirty desk, that dust will get into the vents and clog the cooling fan. They CAN last 10 years (in fact I have some 1995 Toshiba batteries that are still nearly as good as new), but they can also be destroyed in less than 6 months. As an engineer who has both worked for laptop manufacturers and who services laptops dell laptop battery, here is what I can tell you:

The most important rule of getting good life from a battery is this: If you are not traveling, if you are stationary and are going to be plugged into a wall outlet for a day or two or perhaps essentially all of the time, take the battery out of the computer entirely and store it in a cool, dry place (some people will recommend a refrigerator, but that is not necessary, will probably not make a difference that you will really notice, and can damage the battery if the temperature gets too cold (freezing)).

One last comment, given the price of laptop batteries, it's worth noting that SOME extended warranties cover the batteries. Next, run the program. Advanced Tweaks

While Prime95 is running, start up RMClock and examine its settings. Make sure that the program correctly determines your processor's clock speed. If it doesn't, or if the FID and VID menus do not appear, then do not continue. This means that your CPU is not supported by RMClock.

CPU clock speed is determined by multiplying the CPU multiplier (FID) by the bus speed. The bus speed is the rate at which the CPU talks' to the other dell C1295 battery components. Therefore, I will change my voltage setting from 1.5v to 1.475v. Don't forget to hit Apply.' Wait a few seconds (counting to 10 is a good idea), and repeat. To see if it's working, hit the Monitoring' tab in RMClock. This provides a real-time display of your current settings. Don't forget: AS SOON AS PRIME95 FAILS, INCREASE THE VOLTAGE BY 1 ADJUSTMENT AS SOON AS POSSIBLE! Note that if your computer freezes, or if you get the blue screen, it's OK. Remember the last setting that worked, and restart. That setting is your lowest voltage setting. Increasing that number by 1 adjustment is a good idea, to provide a tiny buffer' just in case.

Step 5: Finding The Lowest Voltage Setting At Mimimum FID

Now, set the Minimal FID to the lowest dell 1X793 battery number. Adjust the Minimal VID to match the specifications for Startup. Perform the same steps for the Maximum FID. Be sure to increase the final number by 1 increment to be on the safe side.

Step 6: RMClock Configuration

Now the only steps left are to configure RMClock to run at startup, and reap the benefits! I'm a committed laptop user, but most of the time, I'm just using it at my desk. Do I save more energy by keeping it plugged in, or should I use my charger only when my battery gets low?

First, some good news: Despite your desk-bound ways, you're using a laptop, which is already a greener choice than a desktop. It's not just that you don't have a monitor to plug in—although that's a big part of it. Laptops are typically designed to be more energy-efficient than their desktop counterparts, and all in all, they are estimated to use as much as 80 percent less energy while operating. There's a simple reason why laptops are more efficient: They need to be. Waste energy on a desktop, and you'll get a slightly higher electricity bill. An overview of laptop battery technology

Most laptops now use lithium ion (LiIon) batteries Hp laptop battery LiIons should be managed differently from the NiCad or NiMH batteries used in older laptops. In particular, LiIons should not be run all the way down to prevent "memory effect". First, they don't have a memory effect, and second, running them down tends to reduce their capacity. If the laptop does not need the battery it should be run to about 40% charge and stored in a cool place. LiIon batteries go bad whether used or not, so only buy new LiIons. Typical life is 2-3 years Laptop Battery .

Why are iBook and Powerbook batteries so expensive? Part of the reason is that LiIon batteries can do bad things if they overheat (creation of Lithum metal which "burns" in water, chance of fire). So LiIon battery packs have an internal circuit to prevent overcharging (which would cause them to overheat). There can be several functions for the protection circuit, including shutting it down in case of over charging, when the Hp 346970-001 battery voltage drops to a predefined level, or if it thinks the battery is otherwise damaged.

Problems with the power circuit can cause a "good" battery to shut down. The recent post about fixing iPod batteries likely had to do with re-setting something in the battery protection circuit that caused it to shut the battery off early. Isidor Buchmann's Batteries in a Portable World site talks about methods some have used to try to reset the protection circuit on batteries that seem to have died young.

Trying to reset a LiIon Hp Omnibook XE3 battery protection circuit is dangerous to try yourself - you could end up with a nasty fire. Plus the electrolyte is flammable and caustic, so it needs to be well packaged to make a spill unlikely, even if you do manage to overheat it.

All this costs, which helps explain the price of the batteries...

There is no memory and no scheduled cycling is required to prolong the battery's life.

Charge the Li-ion often, except before a long storage.

Store at about 40% charge in a cool place

Prevent storage in a hot car.

Never freeze a battery.

If your laptop is capable of running without a battery and fixed power is used most of the time, remove the battery and store it in a cool place.

Avoid purchasing spare Li-ion batteries Hp F1739A battery for later use.

Observe manufacturing date when purchasing.

Do not buy old stock, even if sold at clearance prices.
